New Product Manager

Smartrend Manufacturing Group (SMG), Inc., established in 2004, is a leading supplier of customer-specific engineered parts and assemblies for transportation industries and general industrial applications. In 2018, First Light Safety Products (FLSP) was created as a tradename under SMG, to pioneer self-contained illuminated safety products for the pupil transportation industry. In the years since FLSP has emerged as the market leader for Illuminated School Bus Signs and Fully Illuminated Stop Arms and pursued exclusivity over its products and technologies through considerable investment in proprietary know-how and patent protection.



The New Product Manager is a creative professional that oversees all aspects of the process to create and introduce new products to the market. The successful candidate will work with various teams throughout the organization to identify, validate, develop, and launch new products.


Detailed Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research technologies and industries to identify opportunities for new product development, in-line with the Company’s objectives
  • Prepares cost analysis on the development of new products, inclusive of potential market opportunity
  • Research patents, and other intellectual property to ensure there is no infringement concerns
  • Define performance and qualification requirements for new products
  • Performs research, creates proof of concept, and minimal viable product design
  • Lead field verification and validation activities
  • Create designs and drawings of new product details and assemblies using Solid Works CAD software
  • Work with Supply Chain and Quality teams to identify and qualify supply base
  • Support product hand off to manufacturing and in-field implementation
  • Perform ongoing design and technical reviews
  • Other engineering-related activities, as required


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Education: BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of related engineering experience
  • Possess creativity for product development
  • General familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Computer knowledge and skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Solid Works or similar CAD software
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Project management skills are an asset
  • Work well under pressure and under tight timelines
  • High level of organizational skills, detail-oriented, and analytical
  • Must possess excellent communication skills to collaborate with customers and multiple-disciplinary teams
  • An energetic, diligent work ethic and able to work with little supervision
  • Able to travel within Canada, the USA, and internationally, as required
